Effects of adrenergic and cholinergic agents and leukotrienes on mucociliary transport force measured by using frog palate.

چکیده
We have developed a new method to quantify the mucociliary transport force (MCTF). We validated the method by examining the effects of isoproterenol (Iso), norepinephrine (NE), epinephrine (Epi), and acetylcholine (ACh) on MCTF. In the first series of experiments, the effects of leukotrienes (LTs) on MCTF were investigated. In accordance with previous studies, Iso, NE, and ACh induced increases in MCTF, but Epi did not cause any significant effects. In the second series of experiments, LTC. induced a significant increase in MCTF and LTD. induced a significant decrease in MCTF, although these effects were transient. Neither LTB. nor LTE. affected MCTF. The effects of LTC. and LTD. were inhibited by a LT antagonist, FPL55712. These results indicate that we have developed a useful and sensitive method for quantitative determination of the immediate and direct effect of agonists on mucociliary transport, and that selective agonists may be involved in the defense mechanism of the lung to carry mucus plugs or locally produced debris Ollt of the airways.

The Effect of Hydro alcoholic Extract of Aloe Vera (L.) Brum. F, on the Movement of Large Intestine of Male Rats and Its Interaction with Cholinergic, Adrenergic and Nitric Oxide System
Background and aim: Aloe vera leaves have long been used in medicine and nutrition used by various communities. Some of the physiological effects of this plant have been used to treat some gastrointestinal disorders such as gastric ulcer, gastric acid back to esophagus. Therefore, In the present study, the effect of hydroalcoholic extract of aloe vera on mechanical activity of isolated colon of...
متن کاملAcute effects of inhalable particles on the frog palate mucociliary epithelium.
This work was designed to evaluate the toxicity of inhalable particles [less than/equal to] 10 microm in aerodynamic diameter (PM(10)) collected from the urban air in São Paulo, Brazil, to the mucociliary apparatus using the frog palate preparation. Seven groups of frog palates were immersed in different concentrations of PM(10) diluted in Ringer's solution during 120 min: 0 (control, n = 31); ...
متن کاملEffects of nitric oxide in mucociliary transport.
UNLABELLED The airways are made up of ciliated epithelium which secretes mucous, protecting the respiratory tract from particles inhaled during breathing. Its is paramount to understand the physiology and the mechanisms involved in mucociliary activity. Literature suggests that Nitric oxide (NO), especially the one produced by iNOS expression, maintains the mucociliary function and the immune d...
متن کاملEffects of drugs on mucus clearance.
Mucociliary clearance (MCC), the process in which airway mucus together with substances trapped within are moved out of the lungs, is an important defence mechanism of the human body. Drugs may alter this process, such that it is necessary to know the effect of the drugs on MCC. Indeed, agents stimulating MCC may be used therapeutically in respiratory medicine, especially in patients suspected ...
متن کاملMucus transportability: the bovine trachea and frog palate models compared.
For nearly 30 yrs, the mucus-depleted frog palate has been used to measure the ciliary transportability of respiratory and other mucus gels, but the data obtained from this amphibian digestive system may not be applicable to human airway mucociliary clearance. This study compared this model with the mucus-depleted bovine trachea, a mammalian respiratory system. Assessments were made of the repr...
